Overview
Elevators and lifts in office and retail buildings, in construction sites, in apartment buildings, aboard ships, in homes, in workplaces, and elsewhere can cause devastating injuries and fatalities when they fail to perform as intended. The nation’s 600,000 elevators cause injuries that send more than 9,800 people to the hospital each year, according to the Consumer Products Safety Commission.
Automatic doors can malfunction, causing lacerations or amputations (remember this the next time you stick your arm or leg in a door, saying, “Hold that door!”) Elevator cars that mislevel or do not properly align with the floor can cause passengers to trip and fall when they exit.
