The rise of cannabis-induced psychosis among teenagers is a serious public health concern. Research shows that THC in cannabis can cause short-term psychosis, with daily use and higher potency only increasing the risk. In California, emergency room visits for cannabis-induced psychosis (CIP) among teenagers rose from 682 visits in 2016 to a total of 1053, a 54% increase by 2019. The DSM-5 recognizes cannabis-induced psychotic disorder, characterized by sudden mood swings and paranoia within a week of use, sometimes within 24 hours. Despite this, companies like STIIIZY IP LLC have marketed high-potency THC vape pens and cartridges to teenagers, often without sufficient warnings about the severe risks of psychosis.

At 15, the plaintiff was a thriving high school student and athlete. He began using STIIIZY products, which were advertised positively. However, after using these high-potency products, he developed cannabis-induced psychosis, which included hysteria, hallucinations, and severe agitation. He ultimately needed hospitalization, psychiatric treatment, and antipsychotic medications. He continued to experience psychotic delusions for months and still faces personality changes, brain fog, and other mental health challenges.
